Amazon Kindle review: the e-reader for the mass market

Amazon’s new Kindle is the first ebook reader that has a credible chance of cracking the mass market. Smaller, cheaper, faster and better connected than its predecessor, the new Kindle is to the old what the paperback is to the hardback, and on Friday it’s finally officially available in the UK. Prices start at an affordable £109.
It’s worth getting some criticisms of this excellent device out of the way first, however: the open ePub reading format is not supported, so you’re tied into the Amazon ecosystem (which is not too bad a place to be, by the way). The screen isn’t in colour, either, and design-wise this, like the iPad, is a device that needs a cover to protect it from the real world. Unfortunately that will set you back nearly £50 and effectively doubles the width of the device

HP unveils Palm Pre2 and new webOS 2.0

New device will run latest version of Palm's critically acclaimed operating system.

The new Palm Pre2 handset boasts a gigahertz processor for faster operation, a five-megapixel camera, and combines a 3.1in touch-screen with slide-out keyboard. It offers around 16GB of memory, and almost six hours of battery life.

HP has not given any further information about UK pricing and availability of either the webOS 2.0 update or the Palm Pre 2.

The announcement comes just months after Palm was acquired by HP, in a deal worth $1.2 billion.

“This update advances the innovations we introduced 16 months ago, expanding the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers,” said Jon Rubenstein, senior vice president at HP and general manager of Palm’s global business unit.

“We’ve made tremendous strides since the platform launched, and now we’re taking our biggest leap forward with powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done with your webOS device.

Essential Blackberry Software for Fathers

I am only a recent convert to the Blackberry, but I already love it. There are so many convenient tools that help me use my time better. But I know that my family was really reluctant for me to switch to the Blackberry because of the many demands on my time when I am not at home. Using some software tools to help keep family in the mix with your Blackberry can really help keep you better in balance between work, friends and family.
1. Blackberry Unite!
Blackberry Unite! is a free program offered by Blackberry which will allow family members with a Blackberry to share calendars, photos, music and more on the go. For example, you can search your partner's calendar and that of the kids to find an open time for family activities. You can also set a reminder on your family members' Blackberry to go off to remind them of an important event. This is a great tool if you and members of your family are all Blackberry users.

2. WhereRYu?
I love this program. If your kids' Blackberry is gps enabled (and most are), you can use the software to find their whereabouts. You just send an email with the subject "WhereRYu?" and the phone's location will be returned to you on Google Maps. You can add trusted users to the whitelist and then they can be given your coordinates, so it only works with users you add. Put it on your phones and your family members' phones and you will always be able to find one another.

3. Total Fitness for Blackberry
This is one of the best health and nutrition trackers I have seen for Blackberry. This program will track your food intake, weight and exercise. It has its own database of over 5,000 food items that will meet the need of most dads. It helps you create a weight loss program and will track your progress along the way.

4. MobiPocket Reader
One of the easiest book readers ever, MobiPocket lets you select from a huge variety of e-books that can be downloaded to your Blackberry. It is also a pretty universal standard for downloading classic books, scriptures and other resources.

5. Baby FollowUp for Blackberry
For dads who like keeping track of the progress of their adorable baby, this is the software for you. You can track baby's growth, health, vaccinations, and feeding. Ans you can keep a journal of all the cute things your baby does along the way

6. Travel Mate for Blackberry
If you travel for work or pleasure, this program is a must have for your Blackberry. You can enter your travel plans and details, generate checklists, find a fact sheet for the country you are visiting, and convert currency based on current rates. It integrates with your calendar and other software, and works well to help you track your travel plans.

7. Home Inventory for Blackberry
This little Blackberry program lets you manage your home inventory on your device. You can track your net worth, all your personal property (along with warranty information) and serial numbers, and your valuable data and entertainment equipment. In case there is every a theft or loss, you can document fully what was taken or lost.

8. Tank Ace 1944 for BlackBerry
I know it is hard to pick games for people. Everyone has different tastes,. But I think that war games appeal of many men, and Tank Ace 1944 is a good one. You command a World War II tank charging on the enemy (you can pick whether you are an Allied or German tank operator). You may have to stop or divert to get supplies from the locals. The graphics are good and the play is entertaining

9. AI Checkers
This checkers game is a lot of fun playing against your Blackberry. It might even be more fun for your kids to play while you are waiting at the doctor's office or in line at the store.
10. Hangman For BlackBerry
Another good game to entertain the kids. This is the classic Hangman converted to Blackberry. You can play in the following categories: U.S. Capitals, U.S. Presidents, Chemistry, Sports...and more!

New Nokia with Double Technology

Espoo, Finland -- In a move to continue driving innovation in its market leading mobile phone range, Nokia today unveils the super slim Nokia X3 Touch and Type, with a unique combination of a touch screen and traditional 12 button phone keypad. As Nokia's first 'Touch and Type' phone, the Nokia X3 allows people to tap quickly on the bright color touch screen, as well as enjoy the familiarity of the full keypad for quick fire text messages and phone calls. Expected to be on sale in the third quarter, the Nokia X3 is expected to retail for approximately EUR 125, excluding taxes and subsidies.

"Innovation is not just a high-end game. The Nokia X3 is a great example of bringing new consumer value to lower price points," said Mary McDowell, Executive Vice President of Mobile Phones at Nokia.

"With the Nokia X3 we are giving consumers the best of both worlds by combining a touch screen and a keypad in an affordable device. We have given people a larger screen with clear icons and menus plus kept critical keys such as the send and end keys. We've also added dedicated function keys for important links like music and text messaging," she said.

"We have designed the Nokia X3 to be a touch and type device because typing is ideal for SMS and social networking where fast and frequent input is needed, while touch is ideal for functions such as setting alarms, smooth browsing and controlling applications like music and games.

"Our research tells us consumers who have invested years in becoming fast one-handed, one-thumb texters want to maintain their speedy edge for SMS, chat and instant messaging - yet enjoy the benefits of touch as well," continued McDowell.

With its sleek and modern design coming in at a very thin 9.6mm - making it one of the slimmest Nokia phones ever - the Nokia X3 slips easily into the purse or the pocket, and looks the part with its brushed aluminum back cover which will come in five vibrant colors designed to suit any mood or wardrobe.

Despite its size, the Nokia X3 is jam-packed with features including 3G, WLAN, a music player and an FM radio.

Lovers of the snapshot and social networks will enjoy a great 5 megapixel camera with 4X digital zoom that can take both still and video images.

The Nokia X3 also features dedicated music and messaging keys allowing fast access to important Ovi services including social and entertainment applications. In addition to Ovi Mail, people's favorite consumer email and chat accounts can be pushed direct to the phone via Nokia Messaging.

With a gentle glide over the touch screen people can go online and get access to many services including thousands of apps from Ovi Store. In certain markets, the new phone will also be available with Ovi Music Unlimited, enabling the owner to access a virtually limitless range of the latest hit music that can be stored on the available 16GB memory card.

The Nokia X3 - affordable and accessible touch and type which is simple-to-use and beautifully designed. The Nokia X3 Touch and Type sits alongside the Nokia X3-00, a slider with strong music functionality, which was launched in September 2009.

The Nokia Mini Speaker MD-11. Pocket-sized speakers for big sound

Music lovers can boost the Nokia X3's inbuilt speaker with some extra 'oomph' with the new MD-11, a light pocket-size speaker with great audio quality.
